Expectations
In order to keep everyone on the same page and collectively steward the worship team to the best of our ability, we hold the following expectations for band members:
- A Follower of Jesus
Effective worship takes place when the leaders believe every word they sing or play. Each band member, therefore, needs to have put their trust in Jesus Christ for their salvation and be committed to following him daily. We do not expect perfection, but rather evidence of an active pursuit of God in their everyday lives, confession and repentance of sin, and a striving toward holiness. This includes (among other things) refraining from drunkenness, recreational drugs, and living lives with sexual integrity, that is, refraining from sexually active relationships with anyone but a married spouse. While everyone is welcome at New City to hear about the love of Christ and connect with our church, we ask that those leading from stage lead lives above reproach in these areas. Please feel free to talk to a staff member or Community Group leader if you have any questions. We are always open to talk and listen. Again, the point is loving and following Jesus.
- An Active New City Partner
This means regularly (3 times per month on average) attending Sunday service, and participating in a community group. Since serving on the worship team is a significant time commitment, we want to make sure you are getting poured into at church just as much as you are pouring out.
- Prepared
In order to make practice as productive and beneficial to the group as possible, band members are expected to come to rehearsal having listened to and/or rehearsed on their own time and have at least a rough knowledge of their musical part for each song.
- Timely
All call times and practice times translate to when each band member should be on stage with their equipment and instruments plugged in and ready for soundcheck. Each member is responsible for factoring in the time they need in order to be ready by call time.
- A Good Steward of Equipment
At New City church, all equipment was purchased because of the generosity of the church members and is therefore a gift that everyone has the privilege of stewarding. Each band member is responsible for knowing what equipment they need, how to properly use and store it, and notifying the worship leader if anything needs to be replaced.
- A Good Steward of your Influence
The worship team has a particularly “public” serving position at New City, as we are seen on stage each week by the whole congregation. This kind of visibility comes with a certain level of responsibility to lead by example. Therefore, band members have an expectation to be respectful and mindful of what they post on social media in order to properly represent Christ and New City Church.
